dominatrix is a synth-pop/electro project from the 80’s, best remembered for their 1984 club hit, “the dominatrix sleeps tonight”. the brains behind this new york city based project is producer/songwriter stuart argabright, whose other projects over the years have included ike yard, black rain, the futants, the death comet crew, the dystopians, and the voodooists.
the story behind this project began one night when a young stuart met a beautiful mysterious older women in a corvette while hitchhiking. they became friends, spending nights at her east side apartment, getting high and listening to bowie records. after argabright noticed the bull whips and manacles hanging in her closet, it became apparent that his friend’s occupation was chaining up, whipping, and torturing upscale manhattan businessmen (who were very willing victims and had the credit card bills to prove it). this project came to life because of his sincere admiration and respect for professional dominatrixes.

downfall theory embarks on a new chapter as it hosts a full release from a producer other than its owner, sanys. myztical isn’t exactly a newcomer though, and the ukrainian producer has already two releases to his credit on nicz records. given the title of his debut on downfall theory, it is no surprise to learn that myztical is using it as a means to question reality. inspired by the science fiction writer philip k dick and decades of electronic music, he certainly succeeds on venturing into uncharted territories on the title track. muffled, repetitive vocal samples, an atonal rhythm and relentless, slightly distorted kicks show that quite often, simplicity is the most potent ingredient. on “faith of our fathers”, myztical disappears farther down the wormhole. splintered rhythms, deranged howls and a deranged filter push his vision for broken beat techno into the abyss. “substance d” sees the ukrainian hotshot return to a more linear approach, pounding kicks underpin ghostly shrieks before a breakdown sees the track descend into grimy, woody mcbride-style acid. the accompanying vocal sample, the embodiment of a bad trip, only serves to accentuate the track’s darkly hallucinogenic qualities. finally, there’s “shifted realities” - it revisits the jagged filters of “faith of our fathers”, but does so against the backdrop of a pounding industrial kick and a grungy, low-slung rhythm.

necessary mayhem mastermind curtis lynch, in his musical guise as da grynch, lets loose seven slavering dubwise weapon dogs upon an unsuspecting public with this first instalment of the dub chronicles. nm has established itself as one of the best uk labels currently extant, much to curtis credit. this dub set should go a long way to enhancing that hard earned reputation amongst all lovers of dub, appealing to both old and new school adherents. lynch maintains the highest standards possible for his releases, this is reflected in the eye-catching sleeve - a homage to tony mcdermots classic greensleeves scientist sleeves - by ellen g of my lord graphics.

monoton ‘monotonprodukt 02’, also known as mp02, is the debut album of austrian electronic maverick konrad becker. out in 1980 it was a precursor of the minimal techno dub sound that was starting to be popular more than 15 years after. the album has been reissued by desire a couple of years ago and a new pressing is in the work. anyway it’s time to launch a remix ep with new (and not so new) producers giving crédit to the work of the austrian master. on the a side we find 3 new artists paying their dues : sergie rezza, whose debut album out on desire was critically acclaimed, abdulla rashim (abdulla rashim records / northern electronics / semantica) and also opal tapes’ boss stephen bishop own basic house. the b-side is a great megamix of the album tracks by the one and only ambient/electronica veteran scanner !

taking the release-portfolio into account, rampa built over the last years on keinemusik, him adding a new ep to the label s catalogue is worth every credit of trust. and this very “trust” ep is living up to that not only by its name. it certainly offers value for money, considering km-releases have mostly been two-trackers. there are four cuts on this one, each one following a different approach, making it also a hella versatile record.

for the past few years, young denmark vessey has been releasing a series of albums, both as a leader of carious groups and as a sideman in various others, which definitely mark him as one of the most exciting young players in music. vessey’s last album prior to this (2013’s cult classic) employed scud one for the rhythm section. vessey, in his own playing suggest that he may be forging a link between the new mainstream and prior innovations. it is to vessey’s credit that this album achieves a surprising degree of unity. there is little of the haphazard feeling that too often arrends blowing sessions by pick-up bands. it would be easier to mistake this for a group which works regularly. part of that is simply because vessey is a part of the new mainstream, the part that is seeking beyond the accepted common language to find ways of extending it. the rest is because of vessey’s unusual talent.

the lunes de fiel compilation kicks-off with an extended uptempo trapped-in-a-maze hysteria set in a psychedelic 90s norwegian remake of potemkin in the harbor of bergen. in the woods of woody lithuania it continues with a road movie starring a young smugglers couple and arguably the most legendary love scene in film history. the story ends at night with a directors cut of a downhill indiana jones on lsd fighting hungry alligators at the riverside of the elbe valley. a definite must have on the new bitter moon imprint!

uncanny valley and permanent vacation are joining forces for an uncanny vacation! there has always been a lively exchange between dresden and munich and both labels are known for releasing a wide variety of music so it was only natural to team up for a joint release. the record starts off with permanent vacation-regular and uk-veteran dmx krew and his “astro logical” which is as sharp and crisp as electro can go. the bass line strikes hard but he also squeezes some great melancholic synth lines out of his machines. after that, uncanny valley’s sandrow m finally gives access to the much in demand live version of “prayervan”, a tune that everybody has been singing along during his live sets. on the flipside, jacob korn (who already released on both labels) hands in “eieiei” which rises on a percussion-heavy drum basement to a discoid house stomper thanks to an irresistible sample straight from an obscure flea market find. last but not least, drvg cvltvre from the netherlands delivers a tropical house jam. “see you again” is riding on a funky disco bass line and creates a warm and cosy atmosphere with a whole bag of sound ideas. alexander dorn aka credit 00 adds his graphical talents to the record’s sleeve with a brilliant tribute to 1990s adventure video games.

emptyset is a bristol based production project formed by james ginzburg, aka ginz, boss of the multiverse network of labels and paul purgas a longstanding electronic dj/collector and curator of this years we can elude control compilation. their collective agenda has been exploring techno music’s diverse influences and compiling them to a studio template focused on tight production and detailed sound design. inspired by the city’s culture of bass lead production as well as the global resurgence of electronic music, the sound has been described as techno meets dubstep folded back onto techno again, a description which is perhaps the most insightful to date. the project owes credit to the classic releases of m-plant, sahko and chain reaction as well as more recent producers such as alva noto, deathprod and burial. emptyset acts as a research project connecting the ideas of a modern dancefloor with experimental approaches to music and its design.

the new, first time ever on vinyl 2lp reissue of a long way around to a shortcut is somehow a greatest hits of the golden not quite decade of sic alps. well, not quite golden, either. can gold be tarnished? can it be done on purpose? if so, sic alps are artisans of the highest order - for their music is the bright, surging sound of ye olde rock & roll radio (and the garages that tuned in) heard through air darkened with specks of nameless obstruction. in and amongst their ingrown sounds, sic alps take on classic tunes from strapping field hands, throbbing gristle and the zipps on a long way around to a shortcut. it is to their credit that they completely absorb their estimated predecessors and create the only sound left to them: the sound of the sic alps. a long way around to a shortcut was issued as a cd in 2008. it collected songs that were first issued throughout the epic years of 2006 and 2007 on two 12inch eps, three 7inch singles and a cassette, plus a song from a compilation cd r and a song exclusive to this compilation. the records were originally given titles like united, strawberry guillotine, semi streets, hip hop sweepers vol 1, teenage alps, and the soft tour in rough form, but all these original releases are long gone.

the third 12 inch in this essential edit series sees greg wilson reference his past as a disco dj in the late 70s and, subsequently, electro-funk pioneer of the early 80s. going way back to his golden guinea days, ruff wrap revitalizes a hidden gem from 1977 by lady love. this version of casey & finchs infectious miami groover, wrap your arms around me, was a record that, although never issued in the uk, was a particular club favourite on merseyside - its local popularity very much down to one of wilsons influences, terry lennaine, who championed the track on his weekly specialist soul show, keep on truckin. moving on 6 years to 1983, ruff rapp re-arranges the seminal west coast rap cut bad times (i cant stand it) by captain rapp, which was a monster tune on the black scene during the electro-funk era, having initially featured at wilsons club nights back then, legend and the hacienda in manchester, plus wigan pier. focusing on the social problems of the time, the subject matter of the lyric certainly translates to the current credit crunch climate. the crew behind >bad times< included jam & lewis and rich cason, whilst kimberly balls excellent vocal sets the whole thing off

the latest gigolo release is one for the summer! aptly titled hot it comes courtesy of ivano coppola and christian prommer, the former being one of italia s most respected dj s and the latter being, amongst other things, one of the main collaborators for hells critically acclaimed album teufelswerk. taking a sample from willie ninjas classic record hot and building a track around the chords and the vocal leads us to our starting point ivano coppola plastic mix!
ivano coppola has been the resident dj at milan s plastic club since 1992, so it is fair to say that he knows what works on a dance floor, or, to use a popular phrase, what is hot and what is not. it is with this historical knowledge that we find the genesis of our track. i found it necessary to go back in the past, to start producing once again in a 90 style - using samples. the next step was to come back into the future and reach out to christian prommer, highly respected by many including ivan i consider (christian prommer) one of the best producers of the moment! he loved the idea, the remix was huge, and so we decided to co-produce the record. simple!!!
but, for christian this was more then a remix, hence the co-production credit! i liked the idea of translating an early 90 s house-music-sample in to a sample-style-percussive-techno-tune. lots of live played drums and percussion in this one, of course. i only later learned that the sample we used is from one of my house music heroes, maws louie vega. naturally the record found its way into the hands of gigolo in the best way possible, and in the tradition of such a great record label – i played it at the gigolo night in munich and hell came to me dancing and took the tune into his heart.

reissue of this rare italo disco track from 83. probably our last italo disco release since most of it has been bootlegged by now but we really wanted to credit giuliano saglia for this magical release. >firelight< is bouncy 80s synthesizer disco with those trademark italo sounds and vocals (also included the instrumental version). but what should get you really excited is the flemming dalum >firelight< remix. he strips it down to the minimal and builds an amazing dark and intense version that stays true to the original sound but with a modern dancefloor approach.
